Secretary's Helper
Version 3.3
I am paying Dues and updating the Member Record at the same time and the Dues are not always posting although I have posted them. Cause:
You are opening a Member record for changing (removing the Read Only flag); then entering and posting the Dues for that Member and then changing and saving the Member record. When you save the Member record you are over-writing the record with the updated Dues standing.

Remedy:
Complete one task before starting the other. Either make updates to the Member record and save it before entering and posting the member dues or vice-versa.

Secretary's Helper
Version 3.3
I have just upgraded to the latest release and my data is gone! Cause:
To accomomodate changes to "security" in the MS Vista operating system it was necessary to re-design the handling of data.

Remedy:
If you did a Secretary's Helper Backup immediately before the upgrade, which is good practice, you can now do a Secretary's Helper Restore. This will populate the correct folder with your data. If you have several Lodges on Secretary's Helper, you will need to do a restore for each Lodge.

An alternative method is to copy your data folder from its present location to its new location in "My Computer (Windows Explorer)". Instructions for doing so are here - INSTRUCTIONS

Secretary's Helper
Version 3.3
I have just upgraded to the latest release and I am being asked for my "Data Path".

What is this?

Cause:
To accomomodate changes to "security" in the MS Vista operating system it was necessary to re-design the handling of data.

Remedy:
You can choose any location which you like and Secretary's Helper will create a folder called "SecHelp3Data" in the folder which you select where it will store your data.

Secretary's Helper
Version 3.3
I have just upgraded to the latest release and I had to enter my Activation Code the first time I ran the program.

Is there a problem with my code?

Cause:

Secretary's Helper
When I upgraded from Version 2.04 (DOS), it seemed to be a good conversion but most of my members are duplicated in a Members List. Cause:
In Version 2.0, you appear to have the same 3 letter code attached to more than one Status (Classification) of members.

Remedy:
You will have to delete your current database in Version 3 [Tools | Delete Database] and re-import from Version 2.04 AFTER you have fixed your Master Record in the DOS Version.

Change the Status in the DOS Version, so that each 3 letter code is unique and then you are set to re-import your data.

Secretary's Helper
Every time I try to enter a date using the calendar button, I get an error message:

'-2147417848(80010108)'
Automation error
The object invoked has disconnected from its clients.

My OS is Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 and Office XP Professional is installed.

Cause:
The problem is relative to the Calendar OCX not being properly registered. This can occur with Windows XP when Windows XP Service Pack 1 is not installed.

This Control was replaced in Version 3.2

Upgrade to Current Version

Remedy #1:
Install or Re-install Windows XP Service Pack 1 to resolve this problem

IF REMEDY #1 DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM
THEN ON TO REMEDY #2

Remedy #2:
Go to Start | Run and enter the command "regsvr32 /u mscal.ocx" and press the OK button.

This should unregister the mscal.ocx. A Message Box comes up saying so.

[If the /u doesn't work in the middle, put it at the end and if the /u doesn't work try "-u". Sorry for all the options but I have come to "appreciate" the quirks of Microsoft].

Do a Start | Search for "mscal.ocx". I believe you will find at least 2. Check the sizes of these. The smaller one should probably be in the Windows32/System/ directory. Delete this one -- that is the smaller one. [You may want to dump it onto a floppy so that you feel comfortable in case you do the wrong one although you can always recover it from the Recycle Bin].

When the smaller one is deleted, you should only have one mscal.ocx on your system.

Go to Start | Run and type in "regsvr32 mscal.ocx" and press OK button. A Message Box should display saying that the ocx has been successfully registered.

Secretary's Helper
When I open the Program, the Splash Screen takes up most of my screen and when the Members Information screen is loaded, I cannot see the right side and the bottom of it as they are cut off. There are no Scroll Bars to allow me to move so that I can see the other parts.

My screen is set to 800x600 and my Operating System is Windows ME.

Cause:
The system setting for your Screen Display is set to Large or Custom size.

Remedy:
Right click on the Desktop and go to "Properties" on the menu which is shown. Go to "Settings" tab and then press the "Advanced" button. Change the DPI [Display] Setting to "Normal" or "Small" which is 96dpi. Apply this setting which will require that you restart your computer.

Secretary's Helper
I need to change the Grand Lodge Title on the top of the Official Forms.

A new form located under "Tools" in the menu bar was instituted in Build 1031.

Upgrade to Current Version

Remedy:
To change the heading in one of the Official Letters, you need to change the OForm.ini file. Assuming that you used the default installation settings, you will find it at:
C:\Program Files\Linshaw\Secretary's Helper\Data\nnnn
where "nnnn" is the random number assigned to your Lodge folder.

You can edit this ini file in any standard TEXT editor such as Notepad or WordPad. DO NOT USE MS Word or other Word Processor.

CAUTION:
Make a backup copy of the file before you start changing it.

Secretary's Helper
When I tried to enter a new Status in the Lodge Information Window, I was given an Error Message "Runtime Error 58. File Already Exists.". This happened when I tried to save the entry. Cause:
A temporary file - Status.sh_ - has not been deleted after use.

This bug was fixed in Build 1022

Remedy:
Assuming that you used the default installation settings, you will find the temporary file at:
C:\Program Files\Linshaw\Secretary's Helper\Data\nnnn
where "nnnn" is the random number assigned to your Lodge folder.

Delete the file "Status.sh_"

NOTE: The same could occur when adding Ranks or Officers in Lodge Information. In those cases, the temporary files are named "Rank.sh_" and "Officers.sh_" and should be deleted if found.

NOTE: To prevent any loss of data, Secretary's Helper should be closed when deleting any of these temporary files.

Masonic Trivia
Version 2
When loading Masonic Trivia, an error message is received:

Runtime Error 339
Component comdlg32.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered

OS is Windows XP.

Cause:
The named OCX is not being properly registered. This can occur with Windows XP when Windows XP Service Pack 1 is not installed. It is also possible that this file does not exist on the system [an uninstall of some programs can remove this file]

Step 1:
Do a Search to see if the file "Comdlg32.ocx" exists on your system.

If it does, follow Remedy #1 or Remedy #2 below.

If this file does NOT exist on your system, click HERE to download a Service Patch which you can install on your system to correct the problem.

Remedy #1:
Install or Re-install Windows XP Service Pack 1 to resolve this problem

IF REMEDY #1 DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM
THEN ON TO REMEDY #2

Remedy #2:
Go to Start | Run and enter the command "regsvr32 /u comdlg32.ocx" and press the OK button.

This should unregister the comdlg32.ocx. A Message Box comes up saying so.

[If the /u doesn't work in the middle, put it at the end and if the /u doesn't work try "-u". Sorry for all the options but I have come to "appreciate" the quirks of Microsoft].

Do a Start | Search for "comdlg32.ocx". There should only be one. If there are more than one delete one - usually the older one. [This will be in your Recycle Bin to be recovered if necessary].

When you only have one " comdlg32.ocx" on your system, go to Start | Run and type in "regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx" and press OK button. A Message Box should display saying that the ocx has been successfully registered.

Secretary's Helper
The email program in Secretary's Helper will not send email.

I get an error message saying that the process has "Timed Out". I have the most current build of the program.

Cause:
1. It appears that your server requires validation.
OR
2. Your Virus Scanner or Firewall is blocking the program as it is not listed as an allowable one.

Remedy:
Unfortunately, the email program within Secretary's Helper cannot provide validation - a situation which we are hoping to remedy in the future.

In the case of a Virus Scanner or Firewall blocking the program sending messages, you will need to review your installed programs and may have to add Secretary's Helper to the list of programs allowed to send email. If you need to do this, the program name is "sechelp.exe".

Possible Work-around:
If you are using an email address with a domain different from the smtp server domain, try changing it to one for the server domain. You were probably supplied with one.

Secretary's Helper
I changed the information for running reciepts and now, I get an Error Message "Runtime Error 13. Type Mismatch." when I try to print Receipts or Audit Report. Cause:
The field under Receipt Options which stores the sequential number for the receipts has been made blank or an alphabetic character has been entered.

Remedy:
When running Secretary's Helper, go to the top menu bar and click on "Tools" and then "Options".
Enter a NUMERIC value into the field called "Receipt Start Number". Click the OK button to complete the action.
